A landmark for the Talking Newspaper was reached today with our first recording provided on a digital memory stick rather than a cassette tape.
Since 1977 we have sent out cassette tapes of news taken from the Surrey Mirror and other publications. Tape players and cassette tapes have become more difficult to find and listeners used to CDs and DVDs demand better sound quality now.
To enable us to produce digital recordings we have had to invest in completely new equipment including a computer, digital copying machines and enough digital memory sticks to cover our future needs. In addition we have purchased "Boom Boxes". Our listeners can now choose how they listen to our recordings, their own computer or our Boom Box.

Our new Boom Boxes are small and start to play as soon as a memory stick is inserted. Sound quality is much improved.
Our very grateful thanks to local Rotary Clubs for helping us to finance this development and to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council for their continued support of our charity.

Soroptimists award
The Soroptimist International of Reigate & District have received two awards recently for their work with the East Surrey Talking Newspaper.
Michael Finch, Chairman, presented the Club with a Certificate commemorating fifteen years of service from their volunteers who help to copy and post the tapes. The Soroptimists also received an SI Regional Programme Action Award for their service "to the visually impaired thereby allowing them equal access to knowledge".
October 8th 2009
On October 8th 2009 the East Surrey Talking Newspaper recorded our 800th tape.
This milestone was recorded by Yvonne, Keith, Peggy and Paul reading the newspaper articles.
A special section was recorded by David, who provided a portrait of the origins of the newspaper, and the various tasks involved in producing it. He reminded listeners that he was uniquely qualified to look back for three reasons.
He is a long-standing member of Reigate Rotary Club, one of the founding Clubs.
He had served for nine years as the Newspaper's Honorary Treasurer.
Now due to failing eyesight he is a grateful recipient of the tapes himself.
